Painful thoughts negatively affect our existing and future life in many ways – relationships, job performance, sense of freedom, enjoyment, etc. The overall quality of life will be diminished without it. We are given one life – as far as we know. Do we really want to spend it in pain and suffering? Forgiveness brings us out of the past.
